An uneventful morning resulted in my venture to new thrills and bakery. I opened the door to Crumb Bakery only to find tiffany blue walls, a display of sweets and tables filled with people. I drifted past each table until I found one nestled in the far corner of the bakery, ready to people watch. Laying down my bag and laptop freed me to peruse over the sweets on display. Before I could order, something drifted my attention away…or someone.
I felt a nudge from behind, so I turned my attention only to convene with an old friend. She had been away for quite some time, so the moment curated excitement and delight. After we laughed and caught up, I made eye contact with a petite pastry that made my mouth water: rugelach.
I secured myself with the traditional, Jewish pastry and a cup of coffee and strutted back to my table . Al Green's "Let's Stay Together" danced throughout the bakery, sharing good spirits and groove, as did I. I sat down, took a bite of my apricot filled rugelach, and soaked in the radiance of the atmosphere.
The unique and laughable artwork on the walls portrayed a resemblance of Bigfoot. The osmosis movement of people trickling in and out of the bakery was an invitation into their life. Each individual left with croissants, coffee and sweets. I sensed the rugelach dance across my tastebuds, making my mouth water just like my experience at Crumb.
I found myself surrounded by characters hunkering over laptops, friends laughing and catching up, and people resting for a quick moment of bliss. I snickered when I saw a little girl dancing after escaping the chair next to her mother—and get into trouble. I saw shadows of light peeking through the windows changing the way I perceived Crumb. The dancing shadows accentuated diverse characteristics of the bakery, making me see with a new perspective.
I took out a pen and wrote about what I noticed, heard, saw, and smelled. Time here escaped my consciousness because when I looked at the clock, I noticed it was time to leave. I needed to get back to reality. There were assignments, classes, meetings, and events demanding my attention. As I packed my things and threw the weight across my shoulder, I reminisced over the past hour of ease and lightheartedness at Crumb Bakery..
